This Privacy Policy explains what information Big Guy on Stuff collects when you visit bigguyonstuff.com, how that information is used, and the choices you have. The site is operated by Tommy Dempsey, operator of Big Guy on Stuff (bigguyonstuff.com). If anything here is unclear, email tommymdempsey@gmail.com.
Who runs this site
Big Guy on Stuff is a personal blog operated by Tommy Dempsey from Tennessee, United States. There is no parent company, no investors, and no advertising network controlling what gets published. The site earns revenue through affiliate links (see the Affiliate Disclosure) and may in the future participate in Google Reader Revenue Manager for optional reader contributions.
What information is collected
Information you provide directly
- Comments. If you leave a comment, WordPress collects the name, email address, and optional website you supply, along with the IP address of the device used to post. This is standard WordPress behavior. Your email is not displayed publicly.
- Contact emails. If you email the site directly, your message and email address are received and stored in a normal inbox.
- Newsletter signups. If a newsletter signup is offered and you submit your email, it is stored with the email service provider used at the time (currently Mailchimp). You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter email.
Information collected automatically
- Server logs. The web server records standard request information including IP address, user agent string, referrer URL, and the page requested. These logs are used for security, abuse detection, and basic traffic monitoring.
- Google Analytics 4. The site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate traffic patterns. GA4 collects information such as the pages you view, the approximate geographic region, the device and browser type, and how you arrived at the site. GA4 uses cookies (typically named
_gaand_ga_*). You can read Google’s own description at Google’s privacy policy for partner sites. - Google Search Console. Search Console reports aggregate search query data from Google about how users find the site. This data is provided by Google to the site operator and does not include personally identifying information.
- Google AdSense. This site displays advertising through Google AdSense. Google and its third-party vendors use cookies (including the DoubleClick DART cookie) to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites on the internet. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visits to your sites and/or other sites on the Internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of third-party vendor use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting aboutads.info. EU/UK readers can additionally use youronlinechoices.eu. Blocking these cookies will not affect your ability to read the site; you may still see ads, but they will not be personalized.
Note for EU/UK/Swiss readers: Google AdSense displays a consent banner (via Google’s Funding Choices) the first time you visit, asking you to accept or reject personalized advertising. Your choice is stored as a cookie. You can change it at any time using the link in the footer of the ad consent banner.
What we don’t do
- We do not sell your personal information to advertisers or anyone else.
- We do not combine analytics data with personally identifying information to build profiles about you.
- We do not run “pop-up” or “exit-intent” tracking beyond what Google AdSense’s standard ad-serving cookies do.
- Analytics cookies set by Google Analytics (
_ga,_ga_*) to recognize returning visitors and aggregate traffic statistics. These expire automatically after a period set by Google. - Advertising cookies set by Google AdSense and its third-party vendors (including the DoubleClick DART cookie) to serve and measure ads. See the Google AdSense entry above for opt-out paths.
- WordPress functional cookies set only if you log in (which most readers don’t) or leave a comment. The comment-related cookies remember your name and email so you don’t have to re-enter them on future comments. You can decline these by unchecking the “save my information” box on the comment form.
- To deliver pages you request and keep the site running.
- To understand which posts get traffic, where readers come from, and which queries surface the site in search results.
- To reply to comments and direct emails.
- To send the newsletter if you have signed up, and only for that purpose.
- To prevent abuse, spam, and unauthorized access.
- To serve advertising through Google AdSense, as described above.
- Opt out of Google Analytics. Install Google’s opt-out browser add-on, or block analytics cookies in your browser.
- Opt out of personalized advertising. Use Google Ads Settings, aboutads.info, or (for EU/UK) youronlinechoices.eu.
- Delete a comment. Email tommymdempsey@gmail.com with the URL of the comment and it will be removed.
- Newsletter. Click the unsubscribe link in any newsletter email at any time.
- California residents (CCPA/CPRA). If you are a California resident, you have the right to request information about what personal data has been collected about you, request its deletion, and not be discriminated against for exercising those rights. To exercise any of these rights, email tommymdempsey@gmail.com.
- EU/UK residents (GDPR/UK GDPR). If you are in the EU or UK, you have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data. The legal basis for processing is legitimate interest (server logs, analytics in aggregate) and consent (comments, newsletter). To exercise these rights, email tommymdempsey@gmail.com.
Cookies
This site uses cookies for the following purposes:
You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking analytics cookies will not affect your ability to read the site.
Third-party services
When you click an affiliate link to a third-party site (most commonly Amazon), that site sets its own cookies on its own domain. The site operator does not control or have access to those cookies. See the Affiliate Disclosure for more on how affiliate relationships work here.
How information is used
Personal information is not sold or rented. Aggregate analytics data is shared with Google as a necessary part of using Google Analytics. Standard advertising data (such as cookies indicating prior site visits and broad interest categories) is shared with Google AdSense and its third-party vendors to serve advertising, as described above; you can opt out of personalized advertising using the controls listed in the AdSense entry.
Your choices and rights
Children’s privacy
This site is not directed to children under 13, and information is not knowingly collected from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, email tommymdempsey@gmail.com and it will be deleted.
Data retention
Comments and the metadata associated with them are retained indefinitely so that follow-up replies can be made. Server logs are retained for a limited period (typically less than 90 days) for security purposes. Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics 4’s default retention settings.
Changes to this policy
If material changes are made to this policy, the effective date at the top of this page will be updated. Substantive changes that affect existing readers may also be noted in a blog post.
